James O. Cox Award

Congratulations to the 2023-2024 winner of the James O. Cox Award for Outstanding Member of the Year, Mark Waddleton!

The Outstanding Member of the Year Award was created in 1953 by the Purchasing Management Association of Houston—now ISM-Houston, Inc.—to recognize long standing members who continue to volunteer to help operate our organization while demonstrating superior leadership and managerial capabilities in achieving their assigned tasks. The winner of the current year's James O. Cox award for Outstanding Member of the Year is announced in June at a special awards ceremony.

In 1973 the award was renamed to honor James O. Cox who was a journalist and member of the Houston Purchasing Agents Association chronicling our growth for over 34 years. The award recognizes members who have performed exceptional service to ISM-Houston, Inc. exemplifying true professionalism both on the job and within the community.

James O. Cox, at age twenty-five, found himself in one of the most dynamic cities in America at the beginning of its growth. The times were challenging and opportune for a capable journalist. James O. Cox’s life was devoted to serving purchasing associations in this area, both by working with them and recording their activities along the burgeoning South Texas front.

His dedication never subsided. James O. Cox liked members of the Houston Purchasing Agents Association, and they liked him. It was a partnership that benefited everyone. James O. Cox chronicled both their growth and the growth of Houston for 34 years.

Never one for self-glorification, James O. Cox was interested in his friends and the group he served. Cox’s contribution to friends and colleagues far exceeded a mere chronicling of events. He gave them humor and encouragement, both by his written work and his gift of unifying people. Cox not only liked people, but wanted them to know and like each other. He broadened the horizons and friendships of hundreds of purchasers and suppliers in Houston’s industrial complex. He is remembered as the forerunner in unifying Houston businessmen and business women with one another. Cox shared a host of friends, many whom consider it an honor to have known James.

Requirements:

A nominee for the James O. Cox Award must be a regular member of ISM-Houston, Inc. for a minimum of ten consecutive years, must have served either as a voting member of the Board of Directors for at least two consecutive years or been Chair of a committee or combination of committees for at least 3 years. If a voting board member, they must have attended at least 7 of 10 board meetings in the same year. A sitting President is not eligible for this award during their presidential year.

The nominee must have:

a) Demonstrated leadership and managerial capabilities

b) Performed their assigned tasks

c) Attended a majority of the General Meetings

d) Active in ISM-Houston activities

2019 Arnold L. Yauch, Achievement of Excellence Award

David Allen

Shell Oil Contracting & Procurement (Retired)

In the early 1980’s NAPM-Houston, Inc. established the Arnold L. Yauch Scholarship Fund and presented the first Arnold L. Yauch Achievement of Excellence Award to long-time member and Association Secretary/Treasurer Arnold L. Yauch, C.P.M.

The award recognizes individuals who previously received the James O. Cox Award and/or served as President of ISM-Houston, Inc. and whose subsequent contribution has far exceeded succeeding norms of service.

Rather than being presented annually, this award is given when a particular individual deserves such recognition. The number of recipients are few thereby demonstrating the prestige upon which this award is presented.

Criteria for consideration when nominating a member for this award includes an “elder statesman” type quality, particularly with regard to number of years served, types of positions held, respect of the membership, accomplishments, level of participation, and leadership qualities.
